What is Acupuncture and how does it work?
A:
- Acupuncture is a method of encouraging the body to promote natural healing.
- Acupuncture is a Preventative medicine primarily that is used in situations for Restorative and Therapeutic healing.
- Acupuncture has been practiced in China for over 2,000 years.
- Acupuncture is administered by inserting thin needles into the body at points on various channels of qi flow.
- Acupuncture works by regulating the flow of qi (energy) in the body in order to regain a balance.
- Acupuncture helps to bring us back to balance!
What are the various modalities that Harlem Village Community Acupuncture & Healing Center uses?

How many treatments will I need?
A:
- Your practitioner will determine the number of treatments.
- Generally, the more chronic the condition(s), the more treatments will be needed.
- Should the condition(s) be of a more acute nature, fewer treatments are needed.
- Upon resolution of the pre-existing condition(s), a Preventative (maintenance) schedule can be followed. For example, treatment once a month and/or during seasonal transition.
** Acute care for common cold symptoms, minor cuts and sprains, first and second
degree burns, (occurring within 1 day of onset) is generally 1-3 treatments and at a
reduced rate.

Does Acupuncture Hurt?
A:
- People experience different reactions; some feel a slight prick whereas others feel nothing at all.
- When qi (energy) sensation is attained upon palpation and/or needling, generally a heavy, achy, tingling, magnetic, or expanding nature may be felt.
- Once the needles are in, no pain or discomfort should be felt.
- Most patients report a feeling of relaxation once the needles have been inserted.
- During a treatment, some people fall asleep they get so relaxed!
What conditions does acupuncture treat?
A:
Acupuncturist’s focus on treating the individual and not the condition, so whatever array of conditions you may come with, the acupuncturist will treat YOU. One of the key principles of Chinese Medicine is to treat both the “root” of the condition(s) and the “branch” symptoms of the condition(s) of imbalance with individuals.

What is Community Acupuncture?
A:
- Community acupuncture is based on the philosophy that quality preventative health care should be made accessible to ALL members of the community.
- The manifestation of treatment takes various forms from open space communal treatments carried out on individuals in sitting (recliner)
chairs, lying on massage tables or yoga mats to enclosed spaces capable of treating two or more individuals at once.
- It is believed by some that the communal energy of the practitioners and the individuals being healed in a room together promotes healing, so if you find that you are the room with another member of your community…do not be alarmed.
